With everyone winding down and worrying about potential additional travel bans, I could not help but think back on some of the festive seasons we have celebrated in the great wilderness. During 2016/17, we travelled for three weeks and clocked over 6 000km through Kaokoland, the Kunene River, Etosha Nature Reserve, Sossusvlei, Sesfontein, Marienfluss, Puros, Palmwag, Henties Bay and, of course, we conquered the notorious Van Zyl’s Pass.
Our Christmas in what they call ‘No-man’s land’ near Van Zyl’s was particularly special. Since we arrived too late to tackle the pass safely, we decided to make a bonfire, set up our rooftop tents, hang up some Christmas lights and simply enjoy the blessing of being out in the wild with the people closest to our hearts.…
