In 1802 Elisha Bissell, a descendant of a Mayflower Pilgrim, settled in Newcomb. He helped found the remote Adirondack town, and his heirs have had a continuous presence there for nearly 200 years.
One was Augustus Bissell, known as Gusty. In the early 1890s Gusty cobbled together a living as a logger, farmer, wilderness guide and caretaker at Great Camp Santanoni, Robert and Anna Pruyn’s 13,000-acre estate. Gusty and his wife, Annabelle, spent much of their early years together in Santanoni’s “Caretaker’s House,” a two-story structure nearly a quarter mile from the main lodge. Annotations in a Pruyn family photo album also identify the residence as the “Bissell House.”
Gusty would guide the Pruyns’ guests on day hikes and fishing and hunting trips, accompanied by his canine companion, Taters, pictured…
