THIS WINTER, two very different kinds of trails are open for skiing.
The first segment of the Adirondack Rail Trail, between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, won’t be surfaced for bikes until later this year, but when covered with snow it offers a nine-mile corridor for use by cross-country skiers, snowshoers, fat-tire bikers and snowmobilers.
Meanwhile, the vertically inclined can try the new backcountry trails on Jenkins Mountain, at the Paul Smith’s College VIC. For advanced backcountry skiers only, the “Where’s Ron Kon?” system is named for one of the sport’s most enthusiastic local boosters, Ron Konowitz. Skiers are required to have a VIC ski pass, helmet, climbing skins and Alpine touring ski equipment. Snowshoes are not permitted.
