Understanding scale
A topo’s scale is the ratio of distance on the map versus distance on the ground. Typically, USGS maps have a scale of 1:24,000 or 1:25,000. That means one inch on the map represents 24,000 or 25,000 inches on the ground. There are 63,360 inches in a mile. With either of the USGS scales, about 2.5 inches equals a mile.
The smaller the number in the denominator the larger the scale. For example, a 1:24,000 map has a larger scale than a 1:75,000 map. Typically, a large-scale map shows a small region in great detail. In contrast, a map that depicts a large area, such as the entire Adiron-dack Park, is a small-scale map.
