When former Australian fast bowler Wayne Clark became coach of Yorkshire County Cricket Club at the turn of the century, one of his first moves was to introduce an attacking mantra. Fear of failure had become ingrained, and Clark turned to his Australian import, dashing batsman Darren Lehmann, to help shift the thinking.
Lehmann, in turn, encouraged team-mate Michael Vaughan to be more attacking with bat in hand, and the latter embraced this mindset. Yorkshire won its first County championship in 33 years. The street-smart Vaughan carried this philosophy on through a fine Test career as a batsman and Ashes-winning captain until he was curtailed by a knee problem.
