It started around the campfire—ranch hands swapping stories and singing ditties to relax after herding cattle. Over time, wranglers’ nighttime entertainment became known as cowboy poetry, an art form that relates the trials and hilarities of ranch life. In the 1980s, events sprang up around the country to bring the craft to a wider audience: The Colorado Cowboy Poetry Gathering, for instance, launched 30 years ago this month in tribute to some of history’s best performers. (The late Bruce Kiskaddon, considered the foremost cowboy poet in America, rounded up herds in the Trinidad area more than a century ago.) I-70 traffic screwing up your powder day plans? We suggest swapping skis for a surfboard and planning a trip to Suerte Tequila’s six-month-old tasting room, El Conejo, in balmy Sayulita, Mexico. Since the Boulder-based tequila brand’s spirits are made in a remote area of Mexico’s Jalisco region, Suerte is considered a liquor importer to the United States—and federal regulations dictate that importers can’t open stateside tasting venues. JEFF FARD COMMUNITY ACTIVISM If you want to know what’s happening in metro Denver, Jeff Fard’s Facebook Live show is a must-watch. The nearly hourlong installments feature Fard, known as “Brother Jeff,” and at least one guest discussing everything from good policy to good beats to good eats. The speakers are a veritable who’s who of local politics (guests most often come to him asking to be on the show because they know they’ll reach around 1,000 people). Which attorneys did you survey? All licensed attorneys in the seven-county metro area were welcome to participate in our survey, which went live on 5280.com in May. We mailed postcards to nearly 16,000 licensed attorneys actively registered with the Colorado Supreme Court’s Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel and reached out to local bar associations to make sure we received a strong response to the peer-reviewed ballot. Coors Light was “born in the Rockies,” as the brand’s slogan goes, in 1978. The “Cold Train,” mountains turning blue, the infamous twiiiins: With the exception of that last campaign (which had nothing to do with Colorado’s peaks), Coors Light’s advertising has typically paid homage to its home state. Not anymore. Although it’s still the number-two-grossing beer in the United States, Coors Light’s sales are slumping. Heading into 2019, Molson Coors Brewing Company will attempt to revive the Golden-made lager by giving it a new look—one that distances the brand from the Rocky Mountain lifestyle. Obviously, we’re sad Colorado might no longer feature prominently in Coors Light’s commercials. RESTAURANTS In 2016, Coloradans voted to raise the minimum wage gradually each year until it hits $12—and $8.98 for tip-based employees—an hour in January 2020. This month, $8.08 will become the new statewide standard for the latter category. Whether you’re dining at Casa Bonita or Sushi Den, the proprietor is likely to pass his added expense for servers’ wages on to you. (Yes, you still have to tip.) GROCERIES The U.S. Department of Agriculture believes grocery costs will grow by one to two percent nationwide. So, if your boss doles out a standard cost-of-living raise of two to three percent, your King Soopers outlay will effectively decrease in 2019. Judging purely by the models on Paris, New York, and Milan runways, one might assume couture is only for the young. Denver’s Judith Boyd has the numbers to prove otherwise: 10,000 (the unique readers the 75-year-old’s blog, Style Crone, attracts each week) and 42,600 (her Instagram audience at press time). Fans might visit Style Crone to revel in Boyd’s wardrobe—known for its dramatic silhouettes, pops of color, and plethora of flamboyant hats—but the website came from a place of intense sorrow. Boyd began blogging in 2010 to cope with her husband’s illness and eventual death. In Style Crone, Boyd discovered renewed purpose—and she hopes to help others do the same. When the Morin team took over the legendary Wazee Supper Club in LoDo last year, it faced a challenge: transforming a restaurant with 44 years of pizza-and-beer history in its bones into a chic yet relaxed setting for Max Mackissock and Blake Edmunds’ modern French fare. Enter Denver design firm Raw Creative (also behind Mackissock and Edmunds’ Señor Bear in LoHi). Raw left the building’s original brick walls and stained-glass windows intact, as well as the low-ceilinged balcony and old-school dumbwaiter. But for a more contemporary vibe, the firm installed sumptuous blond leather booths and designed an ovular 22-seat walnut bar in the center of the dining room. The braised pork rice at Q House is so simple and so good, it made me feel as if I’d been eating—and loving—it since I was three years old. Chef Christopher Lin’s East Colfax restaurant draws inspiration from his family’s native Taiwan, so I’d presumed that his version of “lu rou fan” (which translates as stewed meat rice, a classic comfort food in that country) would follow the familiar approach: chunks of pork braised in plenty of soy-based sauce poured over steamed rice. What arrived at my table was even more basic, a brownish heap of glistening rice with tiny flecks of meat and pickled mustard greens throughout. Skydiving seems an odd hobby for Sydney Kennett, considering her fear of heights. Fortunately, she does her flying inside, dancing atop gales blowing in a vertical wind tunnel at upward of 100 mph. For Kennett, it’s more than a casual pastime: The Parker preteen is one of the best young indoor skydivers in the world, her every airborne flip fueling interest in the growing sport of “bodyflight.” Many think of indoor skydiving only as a novel way to entertain kids on the weekends—which is how Kennett first took flight at age four. Historians refer to the five decades between the 1893 silver crash and the end of World War II as Aspen’s “quiet years.” Its economic driver extinguished, the mountain town seemed as if it would be forever stuck in the Victorian era. Then philanthropist couple Walter and Elizabeth Paepcke arrived in the mid-1940s with the aim of developing “a ski town with a highbrow cultural life,” as famed journalist Ted Conover wrote in the New York Times. To achieve that goal, Aspen couldn’t continue to be perceived as old-fashioned. So the Paepckes contacted Herbert Bayer—one of just 32 “masters” (read: teachers) of the German art school Bauhaus—and convinced him to move west.
