MODERN WEST First-time visitors to the Coors Western Art Exhibit and Sale often ask the same thing: Where are all the cowboys? It’s a valid question. The gallery, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this month (January 6 to 21 on the third floor of the National Western Complex Expo Hall), is part of the National Western Stock Show, after all. Over the past several years, Denver has seen an uptick in gang-related violence—and the city’s kids have noticed. To wit: When local nonprofit Arts Street@Youth Employment Academy surveyed the young people in its job training program, the majority pinpointed gang violence as the most serious problem facing their demographic. Arts Street decided to do something about that by partnering with organizations such as the Gang Reduction Initiative of Denver to identify youth between 14 and 21 at risk of joining gangs. Then staffers created a comprehensive program called We Still Live, which asked these teens and young adults to explore their identities through culture and art— instead of violence. Participants underwent DNA tests (to learn more about their ancestries), painted self-portraits, and designed and executed community projects with creative elements.…

Collaboration beers are so 2017. This year, collab doughnuts are the thing. Or they could be, if every iteration were as perfect as the Negroni doughnut holes at Kendra Anderson’s three-month-old RiNo hot spot, Bar Helix. While her bar was under construction, Anderson found herself working from neighboring Hotbox Roasters CBD (that’s coffee, beer, and doughnuts, of course). “I was talking to our chef, John Hadala, about the dessert menu,” says Anderson, a Negroni devotee, “and it hit me—we could make a Negroni doughnut!” She shared her vision with Angel Barnett, the baker behind Hotbox’s airy goodies, and Barnett tried a few versions. “They just weren’t boozy enough,” Anderson says. Smith moved to Granby from Southern California in 2016, his rat terrier, Scottie, had to endure the same adjustments to country life that Smith and his wife did. So he decided to make his playful pet the subject of an essay about the transition (“Wild Thing,” page 44). “Frankly, Scottie’s a lot more interesting to write about than we are,” he says. “If his story works as an allegory for us, so be it.” Smith also began posting updates of the dog’s progress on Facebook, to an overwhelming response. “The wee dog has become a minor celebrity,” he says. “I’ve been most surprised by the number of people who have urged me to create a children’s book chronicling his journey—but I’m not sure…

In June 2017, a Bangladeshi woman named Bashita* sat in a rural brothel in India, tearing up from the pain of multiple daily rapes. The 20-year-old, who had only a third-grade education, had been lured into forced prostitution after a family friend promised to marry her if she joined him in India—a common ploy used to draw poor South Asian girls away from their families. Bashita had believed him, and now she was trapped. Fortunately for Bashita, an informant soon tipped off the Exodus Road, an antitrafficking nonprofit based in Colorado Springs with connections in the region. Thanks primarily to video evidence the Exodus Road’s undercover operatives gathered, local police were able to rescue her—along with two other women and two underage girls—and arrest five traffickers and customers. Sometimes change seems to happen all around you, but not to you. Such is the case in Denver’s East Colfax neighborhood, whose immediate neighbors—Lowry and Stapleton—have both recently received residential and commercial makeovers. Soon, though, the 684-acre enclave of East Colfax (the local neighborhood association embraced the name, instead of East Montclair, this past August) is poised for a transformation. Last fall, the city of Denver purchased the defunct PT’s strip club at East Colfax Avenue and Valentia Street with hopes of turning it into a community gathering spot or an affordable housing development. And in November, Denverites approved a general obligation bond allotting $55 million for the East Colfax Bus Rapid Transit project, which will run along East Colfax Avenue between the Auraria Campus and the University of Colorado…

A NEW FLAME The irony of mentioning “Tavernetta” and “fire” in the same sentence— given the restaurant’s seven-week closure following a blaze just eight days after its September opening—isn’t lost on us. My favorite perch at Emmerson is at the far end of the bar, which affords a view into the kitchen. I like to study the moves of pastry chef Jeb Breakell, a slight fellow with a thin mustache who works at his immaculate station with the focus and economy of an ocular surgeon. When he pulls out a nitrous oxide canister to lay down a yogurt foam blanket in a deep black bowl, it’s for a lovely dish called Shiro Miso Flan. On top of the foam, he creates a brain-coral pattern of Japanese-citrus-infused caramel. Then comes the flan, unctuous and creamy, spiked with bits of poached pear.
