Around The World Last summer, I had the pleasure of taking two European vacations—one in Italy, the other in Croatia. When I returned from my travels, my phone’s camera roll was filled with hundreds of photos of centuries-old stone structures, patinated terra-cotta roof shingles, gilded interior moldings, and streets lined with stucco buildings in a spectrum of muted sunset hues. NEW IN TOWN For British designer Andrew Hays, emotion is everything. Since founding the luxury kitchen and design brand Cabbonet in 2019, he has developed a collection of materials and finishes (read: brushed titanium hardware, warm walnut casework, Calacatta marble countertops) with a rich, tactile quality that often elicits a strong emotional response. “I want designers to use our materials and finishes to deliver projects that feel very personal,” Hays says. “We’ve seen a massive movement toward eclectic, warm, nostalgic, homey spaces. THE NEW CLASSICS Borrowing design wisdom from previous generations can yield timeless results. RUSTIC CHIC Enter this Morrison kitchen and you may feel you’ve teleported to Europe. “I started with reclaimed vintage French oak flooring by [South Carolina–based supplier] Vintage Elements,” says designer Dion Williams, who also applied the material to floating shelving and a custom range hood. Adding to the sense of authenticity are intentionally imperfect terra-cotta tiles from Tabarka Studio and walls of Ascona fieldstone, from Telluride Stone, topped with a thick mortar wash known as the German schmear finish. “The result gave us that historic farmhouse look we were hoping for,” Williams says. The opportunity for an architectural do-over is rare in Aspen’s West End, where the Historic Preservation Committee keeps close watch over every addition and alteration made to the neighborhood’s charming homes, many of which have been around since miners and silver barons first settled in town more than a century ago. They say not to take your work home with you, but for Clara Klein, lead sommelier at Sunday Vinyl restaurant and wine bar, that rule doesn’t apply. At her Arvada home, Klein regularly hosts family and friends for dinner parties with the same convivial vibe found at her workplace. Here & Now WHAT’S HOT IN DENVER DESIGN Beholding a sculptural vessel built by ceramist Serra Kizar feels a bit like discovering an archaic artifact. Crafted from textural stoneware clay or smooth terra-cotta, each creation proudly displays the imperfections of a piece made entirely by hand and seemingly exposed to years of wear.
