When you arrive at an event embellished by Denver calligrapher Hannah Howard, you’re greeted by a handwritten welcome, rendered in lyrical, looping script. “For me, calligraphy is a way to say there’s a place for you; that you’ve been thought of before you even showed up,” says Howard, who began honing her organic lettering style in college, later perfecting it while working as a stylist and event designer in Louisiana. 1 URBAN FLAX Vita Kacerovskis, Littleton A former graphic designer who has “made things all [her] life,” Vita Kacerovskis took inspiration from her Latvian upbringing when she launched Urban Flax, her home-textile business. “I wanted to make something that’s beautiful, practical, that comes from a natural source—and I grew up with lovely linens,” says Kacerovskis, who sews simple tablecloths, tea towels, napkins, and other everyday textiles and sells them through her Etsy shop. Working out of her home sewing studio in Littleton, Kacerovskis sources flax linen in natural, white, and gray hues—“a palette that goes with any interior,” she says—and fashions the fabric into useful shapes with simple details. “The texture is more important than the form,” she says. “You can make linen very smooth or leave it un-ironed for…

Denver’s Flour Mill Lofts building (built in 1906 and originally called the Pride of the Rockies flour mill) has all the authenticity and craftsmanship that homeowner Craig Troyer was craving. His vision for the renovation, says Jennie Bishop, a principal at Chicago-based Studio Gild (which collaborated with Denver’s Robb Studio to overhaul the space) was “industrial, old-school construction mixed with new technology—all the bells and whistles.” The bathroom redesign improved the flow: “At first, the space was kind of choppy and awkward,” Bishop says. With the original brick, plaster, and windows still in place, now the bathroom showcases the historic integrity of the building and the elegance of furnishings like a clawfoot tub. When David Larabee, one of the designers behind DoubleButter furniture company, made three wooden cutting boards as a gift for his wife, Megan Hudacky, he couldn’t have foreseen how far that gesture would go. After admiring the modern, geometric boards, Hudacky—founder of Denver interior design firm CKY Design—suggested the pair start a side business. The result is Laradacky (a mashup of the couple’s last names). Larabee’s creations—crafted from solid maple, walnut, or cherry—are beautiful, but they’re not just decor: “They look like fine furniture, but we want people to really whoop on them,” Larabee says. Becky Miller had a problem. The Denver native, interior designer, and real estate agent was obsessed with New York City’s ABC Carpet & Home, the legendary six-story home-decor mecca in the Flatiron District—but it’s more than 1,700 miles away. “I could get lost in that store for hours, and I thought, Why doesn’t Denver have anything like that?” she says. When Sam and J.B. Hochman bought their vintage Victorian home, it seemed like the only for-sale house in Congress Park big enough for their newly blended family, which includes five young daughters and one big dog. The 4,000-square-foot home offered a master suite in the attic, five bedrooms on the second floor, and another bedroom in the basement.
