Caroline Mangosing’s first stint in the fashion industry left her feeling disillusioned and out of place. “I was doing fashion photography in New York in the mid-’90s. Skinny models were in and the industry was super cutthroat,” she says. So, she left. She began volunteering for a youth photography program, then shifted gears to launch Toronto’s Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts and Culture, a youth-led non-profit fostering creativity and mentorship among Filipino-Canadians, in 2007. But as executive director, Mangosing couldn’t escape fashion. She received countless requests for Filipiñana, the traditional dress worn by women in the Philippines, for cultural events—unsurprisingly, since Toronto has one of the largest Filipino diasporas in North America. But, for just as long, a deep anxiety amongst our political class has been cultivated about how new Canadians shape our politics. No sooner had our constitution acts been signed, in 1867, that politicians in the capital began to warn that its rapidly growing Irish population had split allegiances—the Protestants were too concerned with fighting the Catholics, and the Catholics were interested in Canada only insofar as it could help the republican cause. Those Irish may have been living in Canada, it was warned, but their hearts were elsewhere. It’s no secret that many Canadian employers routinely discriminate against immigrants for the crime of lacking “Canadian experience.” Advocates and non-profit organizations have long bemoaned this unfair practice. For decades, immigrants have found crafty ways to sidestep this hurdle, acquiring that precious first Canadian work experience through volunteering, internships, entrepreneurship or entry-level jobs supplied by friends, family and other immigrants. But as Canada grows increasingly pessimistic about its own capacity to prosper, a lack of Canadian experience could become a major economic advantage that helps job seekers find work commensurate with their talents and helps entrepreneurs close more consequential deals with established Canadian counterparts. A min Alsaden has always had “a very complicated” relationship with institutions. Growing up in Iraq under Saddam Hussein’s rule, he lived near some of the country’s most elite culture venues—but because he came from a family that was critical of the regime, he rarely set foot in them. If you don’t think too deeply about it, it sounds like the type of problem-solving gadget that could have useful applications: an app that can change anyone’s accent to a “Western” one (think: nondescript suburban American) in real time. That was exactly the intention for Sanas.ai, a Palo Alto–based tech start-up founded by a diverse group of Stanford grads in 2020. There’s pressure when you take someone to a place you love—at least, I feel there is. I want them to love it too, to find beauty in its smells and sounds, to appreciate its differences from home, to connect to its people. “When my family left Korea, we had to leave behind a piano my sister loved. So, my parents promised that wherever we went, they’d get another one. I’ve always felt that being an immigrant wasn’t the problem. I was born in Trinidad and moved to Canada when I was four (in December—and yes, that went over exactly as well as you think it did), and I was very proud to be from the Caribbean, even though it was very clear to me that Canada was now home. She is a university professor creating a groundbreaking new online survey for Black journalists in Canada. This was her way of saying, Hey, friend! While Jonah Chininga, founder of Calgary-based fintech start-up Woveo, was growing up in Zimbabwe, it was in the midst of a hyperinflation crisis where banks were printing trillion-dollar bank notes and unemployment rates were at 80 per cent. “Seeing how the economy we came from forced a lot of people to become dreamers and entrepreneurs—because jobs weren’t readily available, so you had to create them yourself—had a strong effect on me,” he says.
