THE National Consumer Commission (NCC) is investigating claims of supermarkets artificially inflating the price of ginger and garlic. Several consumers have complained that these products have become disproportionately expensive in the past few months. Before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, ginger cost about R70 a kilo, The Witness newspaper reports, while it now costs nearly R400 a kilo. It all started with a small get-together with my son and his family on New Year’s Day. A few days later, my eight-month-old grandson got sick, stopped breathing and was taken to hospital.
