WORKING ON FOXTEL’S FOOD series The Best, Ben O’Donoghue noticed his offsider Darren Simpson “physically” wasn’t well. The Irishman’s face was “bloated,” O’Donoghue told the Daily Telegraph, but Simpson brushed off concerns. “He was always cheeky and charming.” Socially, his problems were well hidden. They were shockingly exposed on June 22 with the acclaimed chef’s death at age 46, reportedly of a heart attack after a long battle with alcohol addiction. Left to grieve were wife Julie and sons Angus, 14, and Hamish, 12, plus some of the world’s top chefs.
