Surf photography is a fickle game. You’re always hunting for the perfect combination of swell, wind, tide and light. It doesn’t help that where I live at Mt Maunganui beach in New Zealand, it’s flat 90 per cent of the time. But you can either wait for the waves to come to you, or try go to the waves instead. Fortunately, being an island, I can get to spots that receive swell from any direction within a four hour drive. West Coast, East Coast, north swell, south swell…it’s all achievable in a day trip. So I spend a lot of time behind the wheel, chasing swells.
