APPLE’S CARPLAY smartphone integration software is getting a major overhaul and will soon be able to control functions such as the climate control and the driver’s instrument display, as well as providing additional features on the main infotainment screen. Currently, CarPlay only covers infotainment functions such as navigation, music services and phone calls, but the update gives it a much wider scope. If supported by compatible hardware, the updated software will enable the driver’s display to incorporate information from on-phone apps (for example, Apple Maps) alongside key information about the car (such as its speed and fuel level). RANGE ANXIETY IS a common barrier to switching to an electric car. It’s even more pertinent when towing, because not only is range reduced but recharging en route also becomes a lot more complicated. We’ve tested the range of all the electric tow cars in this year’s field. Each performed the same route at our test track, with a series of stops and starts, and driving at a variety of speeds.
