Fifty years ago, as the Swinging Sixties came to an end, Achille Maramotti, the founder of Italian fashion house Max Mara, launched Sportmax, bringing a sporty, fuss-free aesthetic to womenswear. The label has since become synonymous with purist silhouettes, trend-subverting style and relaxed sophistication.
For A/W21, Sportmax chose to shine a spotlight on a signature piece essential to every woman’s wardrobe: the black coat. To conceive its six-piece capsule collection, ‘Black in Time’, the brand looked to the style of six influential women in 20th century history, venturing into its own archive for inspiration, and creating coats in tactile fabrics such as alpaca, wool, gabardine and faux fur.
