’57 356-POWERED SPLIT Jean-Marc persuaded the farmer to part with it for 3,000 francs (less than £400 today) It’s over 40 years since Jean-Marc fell into the VW ‘cauldron’. In 1982, he bought his first VW, a 1967 Beetle, then others followed, including Beetles from 1958, ’65, ’67 and a ’63 Cabriolet, which he still has today, but eventually he felt the need for something bigger.
Fortunately for Jean-Marc, that epiphany came in 1983 - yes, you read that right – and the vehicle that turned his head was a 1957, ex-Swiss army Combi, languishing on a farm near Langon in the Gironde. His friend, Patrice Dubourg, put him onto it, and at the time it was being used to transport straw for the farm’s cattle!
