Hermès is a maker of objects of exquisite quality. Though these objects have come to define luxury in the collective mind, it’s the pursuit of artisanal skill, technical sophistication, aesthetic purity and archival inspiration that concerns this French house. Designed by artist Virginie Jamin, under the leadership of Benoit Pierre Emery, creative director of Hermès tableware, the Tressages Équestres 27-piece collection weaves the house’s equestrian history into dinner party discourse. Line by delicate line, the braids and trims used in harness-making are reconceptualised on porcelain, illustrating the artistic possibility of heritage crafts. The mansion had just been restored by Wilmotte & Associés when I was commissioned to decorate this apartment for a family with young children,” Joséphine Fossey says. When the owners of this Melbourne home mentioned they were looking for a designer, it was their art dealer who insisted: “You have to meet Thomas. In recent years, architects have often elected to design their extensions to contrast, rather than blend into, the existing building. It makes sense — architecture feigning to be older than its years does not usually end well. But the interior designers working on an extended family home in Sydney’s Queens Park have sought a different route. For Gillian Khaw and Tania Handelsmann, it was a case of balancing the spaces, rather than challenging them. “Like a lot of old houses it was very atmospheric,” says Khaw of the four-bedroom, threebathroom Federation home. “You know how old houses are always darker because they don’t have big openings, but they feel solid? There’s a town in the south of France that you may not have heard of. But once upon a time, for aristocratic revellers preparing for the Grand Tour, the coming-of-age adventure they’d spend the rest of their lives expounding on, Hyères must have felt like standing on the precipice of a cliff. “At the beginning of the last century, the railway came from Paris and ended in Hyères, and then maybe 30 years later it continued to Cannes and Nice,” says Florent Dufourcq of interior design firm Studio Haddou Dufourcq. “Hyères was once a very important part of travelling,” says his partner Kim Haddou. “People went to Hyères to take a boat to travel for the Grand Tour.” It was this historical detail that Haddou and Dufourcq used as inspiration…
