Robert L. Thoms, best known for Stars and Stripes photographer John Olson’s picture showing him leading his Marines during the battle at Hue in 1968 and for subsequently taking the highest tower in the city, died in Wasilla, Alaska, on Oct. 1, 2019, at age 75. Known to his comrades in D Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines Regiment, 1st Marine Division, as “Cajun Bob” for the accent acquired from his birthplace of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the staff sergeant’s photographic moment occurred on Feb. 15, 1968, during the Leathernecks’ attack on Dong Ba tower, the highest point at Hue, where North Vietnamese defenders were firing on the Marines, including Thoms’ lieutenant, who was wounded. “Bob led the charge,” said his former company commander, Myron Harrington, in a Stars & Stripes interview.…
