Much of the joy that we—the Victoria staff—receive from producing this gracious lifestyle publication centers on anticipating how we think you will react when you see the special stories and photographs we have selected. As I review the contents of each issue, I am captivated by the peeks into enchanting shops, the visits to homes furnished in what I think of as the “Victoria style,” and especially the accounts of women who have made deliberate choices to follow their hearts and pursue personally satisfying careers. From the letters, e-mails, and Facebook comments we receive, I believe you share my perspective. Bold as it may sound, learning to read has been the most important event of my life, for with it came an inexhaustible introduction to a world of characters and life situations I never could have known otherwise. I grew up in rural Kentucky in the 1950s, so my journey might have taken a drastically different route had I not been blessed with a mother who was a writer herself and a neighbor who drove the county bookmobile directly to our house every other Thursday. I credit these privileges with contributing to my becoming a university English professor and a published author. Summer is the time: Early, before anyone else is out and about, I escape for a walk alone or with my husband, Hugo, if he is ahead of schedule on breakfast making at our inn. Walking is my favored choice for maintaining sanity during our high season. Paula Rubinstein sees endless possibility on every blank canvas. With paintbrush or pencil in hand since childhood, she let her artistry skills emerge on the countless stacks of paper and cardboard from her father’s silk-screen printing business in Cleveland, Ohio. “I don’t remember a time when there wasn’t a surface to explore on,” says Paula, “and there was no one telling me what to do with it or how to approach it. This was simply a part of my household.” At age 11, she accompanied her father to a meeting of his Variety Club of America. The forsaken floral denizens of deserted Texas homesteads and old cemeteries forever changed how G. Michael Shoup regards roses. The botanist, horticulturist, and landscape professional once considered them to be fussy flowers. But then he happened across antique roses that can grow for decades without benefit of human hands. Cuttings taken from these forgotten blooms inspired Shoup to create the Antique Rose Emporium—a Texasbased retail and mail-order nursery that sells four hundred varieties of heirloom roses offering sweet nostalgia and intoxicating fragrances. An 8-acre display garden on the premises showcases the blossoms in gorgeous landscapes.
