These glorious summer days are the realization of my winter dreaming. Although the weather was somewhat mild during a season when we typically have at least one ice storm or a few inches of snow, my thoughts were fixed upon green grass, colorful flowers, and relaxing moments at the beach. The inviting “All-American Lobster Boil” story, on page 36, is just the sort of gathering I imagined during the cold days of January. I recently read The Lobster Chronicles, by Linda Greenlaw, and as a result, my appreciation for the dedicated workers who devote their lives to harvesting the red crustaceans has greatly increased. It was the classic novel The Secret Garden that lured me in. Just like so many other readers— just like you, I bet—Frances Hodgson Burnett’s vision of the lush but half-forgotten garden twining wildly around, sequestered behind the closed gate, was enough to put a spade in my hand and hope in my heart. I’ve been hunting for that secret garden ever since. Who doesn’t love to spy on someone else’s garden? The Fourth of July weekend is when our annual family reunion takes place. It is a time to remember and reminisce, to respect traditions and resolutions, and to return to our roots.
