AROUND 2005/06, Moby Grape started recording a new studio album, sparked by a chance encounter between Jerry Miller and John Mellencamp’s drummer, Dane Clark, a huge Grape fan. “We ended up with The Real Potato,” explains Don Stevenson. “It has myself, Jerry, Peter, Skip’s son, Omar, Kenny Vaughan from Tennessee, plus Dane and Jon E Gee from Mellencamp. All the songs are Moby Grape originals and it’s a really powerful album.”
A mixture of new and old songs, the Clark-produced set includes early live favourite “Dark Magic” (the Grape’s most overtly psychedelic moment), Skip Spence outtake “Rounder” and Miller’s latterday mover “Runnin’ The Train”. Bootleg copies have changed hands over the years, though sound quality is variable.
