If you take the ferry from Mallaig over to Rum and stand as near to the front of the vessel as safety will allow, with the wind, rain and cold biting your face, you are, for those few minutes, a bit of a Viking. Or at least you are experiencing a view of Rum’s mountains, the Rum Cuillin, from the same vantage point as them; out at sea and amongst the elements. More than anywhere I can think of, the mountains here cling to their Norse names; Askival being the highest of the group at 812m. The others – Hallival, Ainshval, Trollabhal, Ruinsival, Barkeval and Orval – all point to something from the past that still lingers.
