Britain’s butterflies are by no means in rude health, but their numbers have at least bounced back from last year’s dismal summer, according to the latest Big Butterfly Count. More than 125,000 people joined in the biggest insect survey in the world, counting, on average, 10.3 butterflies in each 15-minute survey of parks, gardens and other green spaces. This is less than in 2023, but a marked improvement on 2024, when the average count was just 7.2, a record low.
