Before George Smoot’s discoveries about the origins of the universe, cosmology was a theoretical carnival, full of wild speculation and hypotheses that had very little basis in hard data. That all changed in 1992, when Smoot and his research colleague, John Mather, published a groundbreaking picture they had pieced together of how the universe looked just 389,000 years after its formation, an eyeblink in cosmological time. The team measured the cosmic microwave background radiation using data collected by the Cosmic Background Explorer, a satellite carrying instruments Smoot and Mather had developed. The data confirmed that there were minuscule variations in temperature across the universe from shortly after the Big Bang.
