On 16 July, the first trailer appeared for Disney and Pixar’s new animated movie, Hoppers. In the trailer, viewers meet Mabel, an animal-loving student who, with help from some eccentric scientists at her college, transforms into a robot beaver who can talk to other animals.
Daniel Chong, the film’s director, describes Mabel’s journey into the animal kingdom as “weird and hilarious”, and inspired by the wildlife documentary Spy In The Wild, in which scientists disguise cameras in model animals to get close to real ones. Mabel is a bit like a spy “because she’s sneaking in” to the natural world, said Chong.
