Poet honoured with a special coin
Maya Angelou, a poet and social activist, has become the first black woman to feature on a US coin. Angelou, who died in 2014 aged 86, campaigned for black people’s rights through her poetry and writing. The 25-cent coin, known as a quarter, is one of a new series that marks the achievements of pioneering American women.

Thousands rescued from flooding
Thousands of people have been taken to safety from their homes in the state of Minas Gerais after heavy rainfall. Rivers burst their banks, flooding towns and causing landslides. The state capital, Belo Horizonte, had 25 centimetres of rain in 72 hours. At the time The Week Junior went to press, reports said 15 people had died.…
