On 24 September, young people across the world took to the streets demanding that governments take more action to prevent climate change. Climate change is long-term changes in world weather patterns, including rising temperatures. The group swam for more than six miles and faced large swells and jellyfish. They raised more than £6,000 for a mental health charity. A SQUID FINDING A LOST RING A snorkeller off the Cayman Islands in the Caribbean has said she was led to a lost ring by a squid. Scientists have discovered that the planet Mars was shaken by thousands of “super eruptions” – the most violent form of volcanic eruption – over a period of 500 million years. The blasts showered the surface with enough rock and gas to fill 400 million Olympic-sized swimming pools. Today, some parts of northern Mars are scarred by large, shallow craters called calderas. Astronomers used to think these features were formed by huge asteroids (space rocks) hitting the surface, but a 2013 study revealed hidden clues that they were not linked to impacts. For instance, impact craters are almost always circular, and the calderas are oval shaped. An alternative theory was that the scars were the collapsed remains of huge ancient volcanoes. While the Ryder Cup (see below) has been a big international golf event involving the sport’s biggest stars, a fast and frantic version of the sport has also been hitting the headlines. The 2021 British Open Speedgolf Championships were recently held in Oxfordshire, England. In the sport of speedgolf, players need to hit their shots quickly and then jog or run to where their ball has landed and finish each hole. Matches are played on full-size 18-hole courses, just like regular golf games. Speedgolf requires good fitness and the ability to hit accurate shots under the pressure of the clock ticking. Learning the calls of the different birds is an easy way to feel a greater connection to nature. You can do this by yourself or with friends or family. Or ask an adult to search online to see if there is a bird club in your area. For a long time, players have needed a Nintendo games consoleor or handheld devicet to play Pokémon games. However, the huge success of the smartphone game Pokémon Go paved the way for Pikachu and friends to appear on phones. Action game Pokémon Quest, puzzler Pokémon Café Mix and battler Pokémon Masters EX have followed, and now the latest Poké-mobile game has landed: Pokémon Unite, following its release for the Switch console in July. The Magic Circle has elected its youngest ever president, 28-year-old Megan Swann, who is also the society’s first female president. Established in 1905, the Magic Circle is a society for some of the world’s best magicians. Swann has been practising magic since she was five years old, and she joined the Magic Circle when she was 18. Rather than pulling rabbits out of hats, though, Swann uses magic tricks to highlight environmental issues. One of her tricks is to shred a piece of string whilst describing threats to wildlife. She then puts the string back into one piece to show how damage can be reversed.…

As the weather turns colder and leaves begin to fall, it’s a great time to start on some autumnal works of art. Autumn provides all sorts of natural materials to craft with – for exam dried leaves, conkers and pine cones. An art project is an excellent reason to get outside, and by cutting down on using factory-made materials you’re helping the environment too. One idea is to make a leaf mobile. Glue large and colourful leaves onto stiff backing paper and cut around them to keep their shape. Attach strings to the paper and hang the leaves from twigs to make a balanced mobile that slowly spins (you could also add some pine cones). A flamingo’s unusual posture might look strange, but actually a clever energy technique. The birds have locking mechanism that allows them to balance one leg without having make an effort to stay upright. Another idea is that because a flamingo’s legs are the only part of its body not covered by feathers, tucking one leg up is a way of saving energy and keeping warm. A cave on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, in north-west Africa, may have been used as a clothing factory as early as 120,000 years ago, according to new research. Scientists exploring the prehistoric Contrebandiers cave say they’ve found ancient bone tools that were used to work leather and fur into clothing. Our species, Homo sapiens, originated in east Africa around 300,000 years ago, but as our ancestors began to spread out around the world, clothing was an important part of this shift. “We assume that clothing was integral to the expansion of our species into cold habitats”, explained researcher Emily Hallett. Earwig and the Witch (2020) DVD Lots of you might already be familiar with Studio Ghibli, the amazing Japanese animation company behind masterpieces such as Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbour Totoro and Spirited Away. Yet when the studio makes a film that’s not quite up to those standards, it can feel a little bit of a disappointment, and perhaps that’s why its more recent Earwig And The Witch has fallen through the cracks slightly. In 1901, the skeleton of a woman from the 4th century was discovered in York, in England. The woman lived in the city when much of Britain was part of the Roman Empire. She is referred to as the Ivory Bangle Lady because she was buried with a bracelet made of ivory. Her belongings indicate that she was wealthy. In 2010 scientists examined her skeleton and found that she was of north African descent. The Ivory Bangle Lady is considered to be one of the earliest black women in the British Isles.…
