Earlier this month, Bushell was given a guitar by Tom Morello, from the band Rage Against the Machine, after he saw a video of her playing one of their songs. Speaking to The Week Junior, Bushell says that this attention makes her feel “excited and proud of myself”. Monk seals Monk seals in Hawaii, US, have given birth to 18 pups so far this year. This follows a record-breaking year in 2019 when 48 pups were born. Hawaiian monk seals, only found in the Hawaiian islands, are one of the most endangered seal species in the world, with 1,400 left in the wild. A lonely albatross A male black-browed albatross all the way from the South Atlantic ocean has ended up in East Yorkshire after getting lost. He is unlikely to find a mate, though, because experts say he is probably the only one of his kind in Europe. Still, he has attracted more than 300 eager birdwatchers.…

Dogs are much better at smelling things than humans are. Our furry friends have 300 million smell-sensing cells in their noses, compared to about five million in human noses. When a dog breathes in, around 12% of the air gets sucked into an area of the nose just for analysing different odours. This air gets filtered through tiny bony structures to identify the different smells present. From there, receptors send messages to the brain to help the dog identify what it has just sniffed.…

A team of researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the US has made a glove that can translate sign language. The glove is covered with sensors that track the user’s hand movements. The researchers also use sensors on the user’s face to detect different facial expressions. The sensors then send signals to an app, which writes out what the person is signing. The software can translate a word per second and identify up to 660 signs. Disney is making a new, live-action film called Peter Pan and Wendy. It is based on the famous book by Scottish writer J.M. Barrie. Published in 1911, the book tells the story of Peter Pan, a boy who doesn’t grow up, and his adventures in the magical world of Neverland. This won’t be the first Peter Pan film that Disney has made. It’s the amount of “greenhouse gases” (such as carbon dioxide) released into the atmosphere as a result of our actions, the foods we eat, the things we buy and the ways we travel. This contributes to climate change – the long-term changes in weather patterns, mostly caused by human activity including burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. A new virtual-reality (VR) video from the United Nations Environment Programme and Sony PlayStation aims to teach people about their carbon footprint, and how to reduce it. The island of Ireland is one of the key topics in talks between the EU and UK. This is because Ireland is and will remain in the EU, but Northern Ireland is part of the UK and so has left the EU. There will not be border checks between Ireland and Northern Ireland, and Northern Ireland will still follow EU rules. Anew magazine called Cocoa Girl has been launched for black girls. Serlina Boyd, from London, started the magazine for her daughter, because she says there are very few magazines for people who look like her. The first issue launched on 7 July and a version for boys, called Cocoa Boy, will come out in September. This is one of several new projects to make sure that all people in the UK are fairly represented. “We need YOUR butterfly sightings” says Butterfly Conservation, an organisation that helps to preserve butterflies and moths. Sighting, photographing and recording a species of butterfly could help Butterfly Conservation stop the decline of butterflies and moths in the UK. Ask an adult to help you download the free app, called iRecord Butterflies. The app asks you to upload any photographs you have of a butterfly you have seen, which can help you work out which species it is by comparing it to other photos on the app. The app also asks for the date and location of the sighting, and the number of individuals seen. Italy Ice-cream sandwiches, or brioche con gelato, are eaten for breakfast in Sicily, Italy, during the summer. The ice cream is served in a brioche bun and soaks into the bread as it melts. Japan Mochi ice cream is a small, round treat that looks like a dumpling. The word mochi refers to the outside layer, which is made by pounding soft sticky rice into a paste. The traditional process is known as mochitsuki. Thailand In Thailand, ice cream is made fresh to order. The liquid base is poured onto a freezing stainless-steel plate. Anew study published by researchers working in Spain has changed scientists’ view on the story of humanity’s ancient ancestors. Turkana Boy is the most complete skeleton of an early human ever found. It was discovered near Lake Turkana in Kenya in 1984, and is thought to be around 1.5 million years old. It belongs to the species Homo erectus, an ancient ancestor of our own species, Homo sapiens, which lived from around two million to 250,000 years ago. It has long been assumed that Homo erectus had long, flat chests, similar to modern humans. On 9 July, 30 track and field athletes competing in six countries took part in the Inspiration Games. With athletes unable to travel and compete at the same stadium because of coronavirus, the event allowed them to take part online, with cameras recording the action. Competitions were held in the 150- and 200-metre sprints, 100-yard (91.44 metres) dash, 3 x 100-metre relay, pole vault, triple jump and hurdles. The athletes were based in California and Florida, in the US, plus France, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland. Allyson Felix, running in California, won the 150 metres and later helped her team win the relay. The BBC Proms is the world’s largest classical music festival. This year, it celebrates its 125th anniversary in unusual circumstances. The eight-week schedule of daily concerts has had to change because of the coronavirus outbreak. Instead of coming to the Royal Albert Hall in London, where the Proms are traditionally held, people are encouraged to attend from the comfort of their own homes. Starting on 17 July, old and new classical music performances will be broadcast across BBC radio, TV and online channels. The Proms were first held on 10 August 1895 at Queen’s Hall in London. Hot-dog eaters break records Records were broken at a hot-dog-eating contest held in the US on 4 July. Joey Chestnut won the men’s title by eating 75 hot dogs with buns in 10 minutes. Miki Sudo won the women’s title by eating 48½ hot dogs with buns in the same time. Both set new world records. The event is usually held outdoors at Coney Island in New York. A training programme that is teaching dogs to sniff out coronavirus is making good progress, according to the research teams involved. Six dogs are being trained to detect the smell of SARS-CoV-2, the scientific name for the virus that causes Covid-19. If further studies keep giving successful results, the dogs could help identify whether or not people have the virus across the UK. The research is being carried out in Milton Keynes, England, and is led by Professor James Logan of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, working with Durham University and a charity called Medical Detection Dogs, which has already trained dogs to sniff out other diseases, such as cancer and malaria.
