Abridge is being built between two areas of rainforest to help rare golden lion tamarins safely cross a busy road in Brazil. Golden lion tamarins are monkeys that are only found in a tiny part of the coastal rainforests of Brazil. The bridge will help the tamarins’ chances of survival because different groups will be able to meet, which means more potential mating pairs. Golden lion tamarins live about 30 metres up in the trees, usually in small groups. Much of the area where they live has been cleared for buildings, farms and roads. In the 1970s, there were only about 200 individuals left. Since then, charities have been working to save the tamarins by protecting the areas where they live. In 2004, scientists spotted a distant exoplanet called Fomalhaut b, thought to be one of the first exoplanets spotted in visible light by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. However, in 2014, the planet disappeared. Now, scientists from the US believe that the planet was actually a vast cloud of dust, produced by two large bodies colliding while orbiting the star Fomalhaut. Staff from the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California, US, have been streaming live video of their gameplay sessions and talking about the dinosaur skeletons and fish on their island’s museum, for example. Museums around the world have been sharing pictures of the creepiest objects in their collections. It’s in response to a challenge set by the Yorkshire Museum in York, England. On 17 April, it asked museums to share a picture of their creepiest item. The Yorkshire Museum’s entry was a hair bun from the burial of a Roman woman. Other museums responded with items such as a zombie blowfish, a ghoulish mermaid and a supposedly cursed children’s toy.…

Since mid-March, professional football matches have been suspended because of the coronavirus outbreak. This has disappointed many fans in the short term, but there could be a longer lasting impact of the suspension too. Corals are not plants, they are very strange animals. They grow extremely slowly – around two centimetres a year – so some of the big coral reefs we see today have taken 50 million years to form. A team of archaeologists in Israel have discovered that early humans used hand-crafted stone balls to crack open animal bones and get at the food inside. Archaeologists are scientists who study history using evidence of past human activity. Crafted stone balls are common finds at prehistoric sites; the oldest is 2.6 million years old. Ella Assaf, from the University of Tel Aviv, has led a team of researchers to solve, finally, the mystery of what they were used for. Assaf and her team discovered 30 of these stone balls in Qesem Cave in Israel. Looking at them under a microscope, they spotted small marks and remains of fat and bone. Almost one in three people in the UK are reading more books during the coronavirus outbreak than they normally would, a new survey suggests. Those who took part in the study said that books had helped to distract them from what is happening, and escape to other worlds. Nearly half of the youngest age group from the study, aged 18–24, said they were reading more now than they ever had done before. More than 2,000 people took part in the research, which was released for World Book Night on 23 April. This is an annual event designed to encourage people to read more. A man in the US has opened a tin of Spider-Man pasta shapes dating back to 1995 – much to the disgust of his online followers. Matt, who is known on social media as Dinosaur Dracula, said he would open the can if 1,995 people shared his post.
