On 7 September, the new FA Women’s Super League (WSL) season kicked off. The WSL is the top level of women’s football in England, and has 12 professional teams. A record crowd of 31,213 fans watched Manchester City Women beat their local rivals Manchester United Women 1-0 at City’s Etihad Stadium.
After the excitement of this summer’s Women’s World Cup, when millions watched on TV as England reached the semi-finals, support for women’s football is growing. The new record crowd is nearly six times the previous best attendance of 5,265, which was set last season.
