10 November 1871 “Dr Livingstone, I presume?” On 10 November 1871, Welsh journalist Henry Morton Stanley found Scottish explorer David Livingstone, in Africa. No one had heard from him since 1866, when he set off to find the source of the River Nile. Stanley headed to a town called Ujiji by Lake Tanganyika, in modern-day Tanzania. When Stanley arrived there he saw an ill-looking man, and said to him, “Dr Livingstone, I presume?”. The Nile was later confirmed to flow from several places, including Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake.…

Located on Scotland’s Isle of Islay, Loch Gruinart RSPB Nature Reserve is one of the country’s top spots for wildlife. What inspired you to write your novel, Poppy Field? I was asked by the Royal British Legion to find a way of writing about the poppy that would be accessible to both young and old. So I went to John McCrae’s famous poem In Flanders Fields and took my inspiration from his writing of that poem. On 8 November, more than 100 female politicians from around the world were due to gather in the House of Commons at Westminster to celebrate 100 years since women were first allowed to vote in the UK. CBBC Horrible Histories Android / iOS (Free) From the Rotten Romans to the Terrible Tudors, the Horrible Histories TV show has been making people laugh and learn for seven series so far. Now it has an official mobile app, which is described as a “gruesome game-a-thon” featuring some of the messiest, bloodiest and just plain silliest historical facts from the show. It’s a collection of 30 mini-games, where you start with three lives, and have to play until you’ve lost all three, getting the highest score possible. Where can I debate? At your school – if there isn’t a club, start one. All you need is an empty room at lunchtime and some argumentative friends. What do I need to know? There are lots of opportunities for competitive debate around the country. Organisations like the ESU run school competitions, as do lots of university debating societies. How do I get started? Just choose a topic and have a debate. At its simplest, you need at least two people on opposite sides, agreeing and disagreeing about something like, “We should ban school uniform.” Remember to ask people why they feel the way they do.…

● On 26 October, the Moroccan government announced that the country would no longer put the clocks back an hour in autumn. It joins China, India and much of Africa in not changing the time. ● Every year, on two days, the time in the UK changes: on the last Sunday of March the time skips forward by an hour, so 1am becomes 2am. Counting whales can be a tricky task when there’s so much ocean to cover. That’s why the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) is working on an easier, more cost-effective way of studying these enormous marine mammals. BAS scientists have been using satellite images, taken from space, to find, count and describe four species of whale – fin, grey, humpback and southern right whales. The scientists hope that this new method will allow them to track population changes more easily, as well as to find out more about the whales’ behaviour.…

Portuguese circus animals On 30 October, Portugal announced that using wild animals in circuses will be banned by 2024. Circus owners have the next five years to declare their wild animals so that they can be rehomed in suitable wildlife shelters before the ban comes into force. Tigers and rhinos The Chinese government has reversed a ban on trading rhino and tiger body parts. The animals are endangered and the ban has been in place since 1993, but on 29 October, officials said that if the animal grew up in captivity, its body could be used for cultural, medical and scientific purposes.…

After nearly 10 years of staring at the stars, NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope is retiring, and will now simply float in space. Kepler was launched on 6 March 2009. Its mission was to search for planets beyond our solar system. It discovered more than 2,600 exoplanets (planets orbiting stars outside the solar system), many of which could harbour life. “Its discoveries have shed a new light on our place in the universe, and illuminated the tantalising mysteries and possibilities among the stars,” said Thomas Zurbuchen of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.…

After six years, St Fagans National Museum of History, near Cardiff, has completed a £30 million upgrade. With the help of more than 3,000 volunteers, including artists, charities and children, the museum has been refurbished and new exhibits have been added. The aim of the museum is to explore the history of Wales and show how people have lived in the country from 230,000 years ago to today. It does this through a collection of folktales, crafts and items that reflect the past. It is Wales’s largest and most popular heritage attraction – more than half a million people visited each year. Debating involves thinking about different ideas and arguments with the aim of persuading other people to agree with your point of view. Politicians and businesspeople do it all the time. They use debating techniques to convince us that we should vote for a certain person or party, and to explain why prices have to go up. However, you don’t need to be either to debate. If you’ve ever tried to convince your parents or carers that you should have a later bedtime or that you deserve more pocket money, then you’re already on your way to being a debater. The story commemorates the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Witches switch their broomsticks for paddles Typically, witches are portrayed as riding on broomsticks high up in the night sky, but on 27 October, hundreds of them were spotted travelling down Willamette River, in the US state of Oregon, on paddleboards.
