Eiko Kadono is one of Japan’s most beloved authors. Now she has been given the ultimate global honour: the 2018 Hans Christian Andersen Award. It is the biggest prize a children’s author can win.
You may not know her name, but you might be familiar with her most famous creation, Kiki’s Delivery Service. The story, about a 13-year-old witch, was turned into a animated film in 1989. Kadono is now 83 years old and has written nearly 200 books. Her editor, Tomoko Honobe, enjoys working with the author, describing her as “a good witch. She is mischievous, chatty, energetic and young.” Kadono says that her stories belong to everyone. “The significance of storytelling is, once it is handed to readers, it becomes theirs,” she says.…
