Last month, in Turkey 7,500 frogs were released back into the wild after one of the country’s largest frog-trafficking operations was uncovered. Five poachers are believed to have been transporting the amphibians to the Turkish city of Adana. There they were to be sold illegally to traders in China and France, where frogs are an edible delicacy.
● LIFESPAN IN THE WILD: On average, they live between eight and 10 years.
● HABITAT: The bushes, trees and grass near fresh water in the western Mediterranean, in countries such as Morocco and Spain.
● DIET: The Mediterranean tree frog eats ants, beetles, butterflies, flies, moths and spiders.
● FUN FACT: The female can lay up to 1,000 eggs at a time.
