The People tab 1 The Find My app is divided into three sections, represented by icons at the foot of the screen; People, Devices, and Me. Unsurprisingly, the People tab is for finding your friends. Features of the Files app 1 When you first open the Files app, you see two icons at the foot of the screen. The Recents icon shows you documents you’ve recently opened, and also gives access to those you’ve shared and tagged with a colour. The Browse icon lets you look through your files. 2 The Files app has an improved search facility. Changing your Wallpaper 1 Go to Settings > Wallpaper and tap Choose a New Wallpaper. Choose from Dynamic, Stills, Live, or a pic from the Photos app. Dynamic wallpapers are lightly animated, Stills are static and Live wallpapers give more movement. 2 Tap the pictures found under the Dynamic, Stills and Live options to navigate your way through your Photos app’s images. Using the Battery Health feature 1 Go to Settings > Battery. You’re taken to the Battery screen, where you can see information related to your battery. You can see which apps have taken up a lot of power and also reduce brightness or turn on Low Power Mode if you’re low on power. 2 Tap the new Battery Health option and you’re shown your battery’s maximum capacity, which, when fully charged, is how much power it holds compared to when it was new. You’re also shown whether the Peak Performance Capacity has been restricted. 3 To prevent battery degradation, make sure Optimised Battery Charging is on. Downloading and updating iOS 1 To check for a new version of iOS, first of all open the Settings app from the Home screen. It’s the silver-coloured icon showing a series of cogs. From the next screen, scroll up until you see the General link and then tap it. 2 In General, tap Software Update. Your iPhone checks with Apple to see if there is a newer version than the one you’re running. If there isn’t, you’re told you’re up to date, but if there is, you can install it now. 3 If an update’s available, tap the Download and Install link. 1 To set up and use Dark Mode, open System Preferences (the app with the grey icon showing cogs), and scroll up. Tap the Display and Brightness link; it’s in the third set of links, and has a blue double-A icon. 2 At the top of the screen, you see the Light and Dark options; tap one to choose it, immediately making the screen light or dark. This is the option you use to change the screen mode on a permanent basis. 3 Under the Light and Dark pictures, there’s a switch labelled ‘Automatic’. AirPods If both you and a friend are using AirPods, you can now share your music. Just bring your iPhones together, and the one that’s playing will ask the other if it wants to share audio. Choose to do so, and the pairing for the AirPods is transferred to the other phone. Siri can read incoming notifications using second-generation AirPods too. HomePod With iOS 13, you can transfer songs from playing on your iPhone to playing on your HomePod just by moving the phone closer to the Apple speaker; you no longer have to ask Siri to do this for you. Joining a Wi-Fi network 1 To activate Wi-Fi go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn it on. The iPhone searches for all networks in range. If at home, pick your home network and enter the security details, the password should be supplied with your router. 2 If you’re at a public hotspot that has no security, you can just connect. If it’s password protected, which is far more likely, you need to get the network name and the passcode from whoever is providing the Wi-Fi service. 3 From now on, whenever you’re in range of this Wi-Fi service the iPhone automatically connects without any prompting. Touchscreen actions Touch The iPhone has a capacitive touchscreen, which means it’s sensitive to the tiny electrical charges in our bodies. With this type of screen, you only have to tap it, not press down hard with your finger. The FaceTime camera is good for selfies and FaceTime chats and the iSight camera for general photography 2 Tap the flash icon and you can set the flash to activate automatically when light is low, switch it on so it always flashes or switch it off so it doesn’t flash at all. 3 HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. It works by taking several photos at different exposures in a short burst and then combining them into a single image. Setting up Do Not Disturb 1 Open Settings and tap on Do Not Disturb. From here, you can switch Do Not Disturb on manually or set it to automatically turn on and off according to a preset schedule that you can set up for your requirements. Deleting apps 1 If you want to delete an app, or apps, that you no longer need, first of all, tap and hold a home page app icon; any icon. A menu springs up. Tap the Rearrange Apps option at the bottom of this pop-up menu. 2 The app icons wobble and show an X in the corner. Tap the X of any app you want to delete, and then confirm. The app’s data is also deleted, unless it’s stored on iCloud. Rearrange apps When you tap and hold an app, instead of giving all the icons an ‘X’ that you can use to delete them, you get a menu. Inserting your Nano-SIM card 1 To activate your iPhone, you must first insert the Nano-SIM card provided by your mobile phone network provider. An eSim card is non-removal as detailed below. 2 Use a SIM eject tool like the one pictured here, or maybe a straightened paper clip, and insert it into the small hole next to the SIM slot. Making a Memoji 1 Open the Messages app. Tap the monkey in the app drawer for the Animojis and scroll them all the way to the right until you see the Plus icon. Tap it to start your Memoji. How to store credit and debit card information 1 To use Apple Pay, you need at least an iPhone 6, 6 Plus or SE; or an Apple Watch connected to a compatible iOS device. Using the Notification Centre 1 To access the Notification Centre, swipe your finger down from the top of the screen. Notifications are arranged in stacks according to the app that sent them. Tap one of these stacks to open it and see its notifications. 2 To clear a single notification, swipe it left and tap the Clear button. To delete all notifications received on a given day, tap the X next to the day and then the Clear button that replaces it.
