James and Jane Mulleneux run 340-acre Holbeam Wood Farm, in East Sussex, in the High Weald AONB. In 2009, it was entered into a Higher Level Stewardship agreement, which funded arable reversion to grassland, pond renovation, hedge planting and fencing. It includes low-input spring cereals and pasture sown with traditional grass species and wildflowers. “Some of the leys look fantastic,” says James Mulleneux, GWCT Sussex chairman.
Supplementary feed and game crops, paid for by the farm pheasant shoot, provide habitat and food for pollinators and songbirds. “Since we started the shoot, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of songbirds, including skylarks, linnets and yellowhammers.”
