WHEN JAMIE MET TONY “When we first started campaigning, there were standards for dog food, but not for school food. Can you believe that?” Jamie Oliver tells The Big Issue, looking back on his time as school dinner champion. There was a change of direction when Tony Blair became PM in 1997. By 2000, the Food Standards Agency was established. The pandemic has been extremely tough for unpaid carers. The charity Carers UK warns that a huge number are close to breaking point, burned out by months of looking after a family member or friend, and isolated by lockdown. It estimates that every day in the UK, 600 people give up work to care for an older or disabled relative, and 74 per cent told the charity that they are exhausted, having cared around the clock, and do not know how they can continue without time off. If you ever get to read my now out-of-print autobiography, Some Luck, you will be astonished at the beginning of one particular chapter because it starts off with my ingrowing toenail. I think it was The Spectator reviewer who commented on the perversity of anyone starting a chapter of such a serious thing as an autobiography with a description of problems with one’s big toe. I think there’s a problem with service in this country, and I think it’s because of our class system. People in retail, hospitality etc are not given respect by many people they serve. Child poverty is nothing new – but unlike in Dickens’ time, there is now absolutely no reason that children should be hungry. An exhibition at the Charles Dickens Museum revisits the classic tale of tragedy and triumph, Oliver Twist , and highlights its contemporary parallels. Included is this image by surreal digital collaging satirist Cold War Steve, produced as a Christmas card to raise money for food poverty charity FareShare. From Thatcher to Rashford, via Jamie Oliver, the provision of school meals, the nutritional standards, and what – if anything – they should cost has been subject to the wandering will of our political leaders.
