Time is running out for the government to set out clear plans on how it will prevent rough sleepers from returning to the streets when their hotel stays expire at the end of June. The Everybody In campaign was hailed as a “truly remarkable achievement” by homelessness minister Luke Hall as he confirmed that 14,610 people had been moved into accommodation to protect them from Covid-19 following a plea from statistics regulators for transparency. But Hall’s written parliamentary statement has not made the government’s immediate plans any clearer as Dame Louise Casey’s Rough Sleeping Taskforce works with councils to find “safe, long-term” homes for rough sleepers put up in hotels. I was born just before the Second World War broke out, and when it did I was swiftly evacuated to the English country town of Luton. This is where I developed and grew, away from the filthy, war-battered slums of Whitechapel where we were living. I swam daily in the open-air lido, collected conkers in autumn which shone like gems, and loved my country life. When I was a child, my mum used to let me watch pretty much whatever I wanted on the box. On my own, I would watch the standards of any ’80s boyhood: The Dukes of Hazzard, The A-Team, The Professionals and Dick Turpin. There are many differences between now and when we last went through death so close and tragic. Now we have newspapers and TV programmes, and the ever-spreading social media. Back then, in the Second World War, we had a tight-lipped press, made tight-lipped by Churchill and his governing associates. Churchill and his government could screw up big time: deaths in Calais and Norway, and North Africa, through poor military strategising. Deaths through poor distribution of wealth and health throughout the war, still based on class and pecking order position. One of the recurring features of lockdown has been being confronted by my own instances of good fortune. I knew what many of them were: I am still in work, I have young parents, I don’t have children, I can work from home. Bath Big Issue vendor and chef Ian Duff has become a welcome regular in our pages during lockdown. After becoming a hit on Twitter with his quick-to-rustle-up recipes, he’s been offering delicious treats in the mag like lentil stew, hummus and courgettes au gratin which aren’t too taxing to follow for even the most inexperienced of chefs. Nearly two million kids are going hungry in the UK during the Covid-19 lockdown – so rapper Dizzee Rascal is joining efforts to help get food to those who need it. The Bonkers star dropped in on Bygrove Primary School in Poplar, East London, recently to pack food parcels and serve meals to children and families, seeing first-hand the hardship that the virus has brought. He teamed up with Kitchen Social, the food poverty-busting programme of charity Mayor’s Fund for London, run by Big Issue Changemaker Clara Widdison, to help out. It comes as Food Foundation figures revealed that food insecurity has shot up by 250 per cent since the pandemic hit. Expert needleworkers refurbish historic tutus to fit the latest ballet dancers and the on-site dye studio ensures fabrics are the perfect shade. From the emerald-green gem-encrusted waistcoats used in Balanchine’s Jewels to the meringue dress made for Laurent Pelly’s version of Massenet’s opera Cinderella, the costumiers work across a diverse range of productions.
