Who is the greatest modern tabletop designer is a frivolous and unwinnable debate, but were you to undertake such a folly, you wouldn’t be laughed out of the room for introducing the name Uwe Rosenberg. His brand of mostly pastoral, mostly worker-placement-ish games has given us Agricola, Caverna, A Feast for Odin, Patchwork and Bohnanza, among many others. Now Kanal, a mildly rejigged version of 2023’s Oranienburger Kanal, offers familiar Rosenberg mechanisms themed around industrial German waterways.
