THE MARGARITA HAS long inspired visions of lazy days by the pool, steamy Mexican nights and wild parties. In recent years, spicy versions of the margarita have taken the drinking world by storm, emerging as one of Australia’s favourite cocktails and finding its way onto drinks lists well beyond your local taco joint. Adding spice to a cocktail might seem an odd choice, but the chillies can add layers of flavour and depth to a drink, matching well with the margarita’s other components of tequila, lime, salt and sweetness, and offering a heightened sensory experience along with added complexity. SWEDEN IS AMONG the world’s most egalitarian societies, but you might not sense that when surveying the ancestral estates that rise above the gently rolling landscape of the southern Skåne province, near the border with Denmark. Among them is the 14th-century Högestad, outside the town of Ystad, which has been owned for the past 300 years by descendants of Count Carl Piper, a nobleman who purchased the agricultural spread around 1705. IN THE ’90s, FRANCK MULLER emerged as the watch world’s enfant terrible. In a world of straitlaced tradition, his weird and wonderful creations were characterised by their boldness. Franck Muller’s Crazy Hours watch, for example, featured a jumble of numbers scattered over the dial in a random order. Bringing (some) sense to the madness, an ingenious mechanical complication then snapped the hour hand from one numeral to the next in order to tell the correct time. That willingness to push the envelope is evident, too, in the new Vanguard Slim Skeleton. The joy of a skeleton movement is that it literally reveals what makes a watch tick, removing the dial to expose the inner mechanics. EVERYTHING ALL AT ONCE

FOR THE QUEENS, New York-based duo Raphael Martinez Cohen and Ryan Bush, terrazzo is a way to repurpose the detritus of daily life. The two artists founded their joint sculptural practice, Ficus Interfaith, nine years ago. Since then, they have added peach stones, oyster shells, the royal blue glass of Saratoga water bottles, petrified wood and deer bones — discovered on Martinez Cohen’s parents’ property upstate — to the mix of marble chips, other stone fragments and cement that is traditionally ground up to make terrazzo, the speckled composite material that has become the pair’s primary medium. Martinez Cohen and Bush combine their unconventional rock substitutes with coloured cement or epoxy, forming a slurry that they pour into zinc and brass outlines to create kitschy, expressionistic tableaus. Each November and December, a thousand critics publish their professional verdicts in every category, and then a million readers flock to social media to agree or disagree, often vehemently, as though lives were at stake. The ranking of pop songs — is “Padam Padam” better than “Dance the Night”? — suddenly becomes a vicious blood sport. All these lists are subjective, of course. PEOPLE, PLACES, THINGS Crafting intricate settings for contemporary haute joaillerie can be a painstaking task, with artisans meticulously jigsawing an assortment of stones and metals into mind-bending configurations. Sometimes, though, the simplest-seeming pieces require the most effort, says Laurence Graff, the 85-year-old English jeweller and entrepreneur who in 1962 opened his first two shops in London’s Hatton Garden jewellery district and now oversees an international empire. It can take years to amass gems in coordinated sizes, colours and cuts to complete what may end up looking like a casual, if lavish, rope of stones. “We must be patient,” Graff says. ON A TRIP to Monte Carlo in 1923, the French couturier Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel was introduced to Hugh Grosvenor, the second Duke of Westminster, with whom she began a decade-long love affair. The couple would go hunting and fishing at his 40,000-hectare Reay Forest estate in the Scottish Highlands, where, on blustery days, the designer often borrowed the duke’s tweed blazers. Eventually, she enlisted the Scottish mill Linton Tweeds to produce her own yardage and, having famously cast aside delicate crepes and muslins, she presented her first cardigan made from the nubby fabric. “I asked wholesalers for natural colours,” she would later recall to the French novelist Paul Morand. “I wanted women to be guided by nature.” Chanel’s bouclé tweeds and tartan ensembles, which were made in monochrome as well…
