TRANSNET has remained under sharp criticism for the inefficiencies rocking South Africa’s ports and economic activity, despite its dismissal of findings by the World Bank that the Cape Town Port is the worst in the world while Durban, Coega, and Port Elizabeth in Queberha are also lowly ranked. In its 2023 Container Port Performance Index released last week, the World Bank ranked these South African ports and terminals among the worst in the world. Former SANDF member Leon Santos Conga has been convicted of attempted murder and rape, for failing to disclose his HIV status to his former partner, and infecting her with the virus. The complainant, Antoinette Ndishishi, is represented by Afri- Forum’s Private Prosecution Unit (PPU), which has been supporting her fight for justice since she approached the unit in 2018. The evidence that the unit helped secure was critical to the conviction. The unit forced the SANDF to release Conga’s medical records, which revealed that he was aware of his HIV status since 2007. Their refusal to provide these records forced the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to withdraw the case twice. Without these records, the docket lacked sufficient evidence to charge the accused. TELKOM climbed 5.7% to close at R24.99 per share yesterday on news that normalised headline earnings per share (Heps), a core measure of profit- ability would climb by as much as 205% in the year to end-March. Gauteng police arrested a suspect linked to the murders of Soshanguve siblings, seven-year-old Tinyiko, and four-year-old Mpfumo. The children, along with two others were shot in an attack at Changing Spot informal settlement in Soshanguve earlier this month.
