The marginally better than forecasted economic growth rate of 0.6% during quarter two did not affect markets as a weak figure was expected and was already discounted for by the equity market. Two members of the Tshwane Metro Police Department and a third man, believed to be their accomplice, have been arrested and charged for truck hijacking on the R21 highway in Gauteng. Istanbul: An injured US explorer trapped more than 1 000m deep in a Turkish cave for eight days has been transported 300m towards the surface, rescuers said yesterday. Mark Dickey, 40, reported falling sick on September 2 while exploring the Morca Cave in southern Turkey’s Taurus Mountains with an international team. Dickey fell ill at a depth of 1 120m and has been resting at a base camp 1 040m underground. He was moved by rescuers on a stretcher over 10 hours. International medics have given Dickey first aid. Geneva: A plane flying from Zurich to Spain at the weekend arrived without a single piece of luggage onboard, unbeknown to the passengers, as the airline blamed ground staff shortages. Passengers on the Swiss airlines flight to the northern Spanish city of Bilbao on Saturday evening waited by the conveyor belt for their luggage to appear for more than two hours, but in vain. THE MINISTER of Electricity Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has placed all his hopes of ending higher stages of load shedding on the misfiring Kusile power station in Witbank, Mpumalanga. Kusile is a multi-billion rand 3 200MW coal-fired power station in which a number of generation units are not operating after a section of the flue-gas desulphurisation duct, which carries emissions from Kusile Unit 1 into a large chimney, collapsed in October 2022, contributing roughly two stages of load shedding. I have arrived at the conclusion that we, that most people, are unfair and unrealistic towards the ANC. I am glad you asked, how so? I would argue that the ANC has fulfilled/accomplished their mission for their existence. The ANC was founded by African middle class individuals of that time – doctors, lawyers, academics, etc. to plead with the then British colonial administration, followed by the apartheid rulers, to at least see and treat them differently than the rest of the African masses. It was a horrifying disaster, one of the worst in South Africa. Over 70 people had an agonising death trapped in a blazing building in Joburg’s CBD. Seasoned firemen who had witnessed many disasters in their lives and had become accustomed to seeing scenes of human tragedy couldn’t believe what they saw before them: scenes of devastation and horror of the charred remains of human beings which lay strewn all before them.
