The killing of four children, allegedly by their 32-year-old mother, has rocked the nation, raising concern about the high rate of child murders.
The Eastern Cape woman is behind bars for allegedly killing the children with a sledgehammer in Tsalaba Village yesterday morning. The children, aged 2, 5, 9 and 11, were found dead in a room where they sleep.
A total of 549 South African children were murdered in the first six months of this year, according to an Al Jazeera report.
In the first quarter of the financial year, from April to June, 243 children were murdered, according to SAPS crime statistics.
Between October and December 2021, 352 children were murdered.
