THE DA in Gauteng wants Premier David Makhura urgently out of office after saying he has “failed” as a leader. CIVIL society has continued to call for the South African government to impose severe sanctions on the disgraced global management consultancy Bain & Company. The British government last week blacklisted Bain & Company from doing business with the State for three years due to corrupt reports it produced for the South African Revenue Service (Sars) at the height of the State Capture years. I am not a close follower of horse racing. It was thus with interest that I watched the Gold Cup race last Saturday. What disturbed me, though, was that as the horses entered the final 200m, what caught my eye was them being beaten with a riding whip, euphemistically called a crop. How barbaric! In this enlightened age, surely it is not necessary to beat horses in this fashion.
