JOBURG residents have been asked to use water sparingly over the next four days to avoid what could be a water disaster which could affect other municipalities. Rand Water which supplies the entire province with water said yesterday that there would be planned infrastructure work on two pipelines connected to the Weltevreden water reservoir. The planned work on these two pipes will affect the flow of water to several areas around Johannesburg and the West Rand. Malnutrition has three simultaneous dimensions: undernourishment, micronutrient deficiencies and over-nutrition. These can manifest in stunting – being short for one’s age because of long-term undernutrition. In 2016 it was estimated to occur in 27% of South African children. This is high. Africa is currently the only continent where stunting rates continue to rise, with 27% of African children classified as stunted in 2018. Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) MEC Panyaza Lesufi yesterday said he was shocked to learn about the deaths of the children from Kaalfontein Primary School in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni. The department could not release the names of the children who lived in Ivory Park, extension 2, however, confirmed that the Grade 1 boy was aged six and the Grade 2 girl was eight. RAMALLAH: A Palestinian teen was shot dead by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank yesterday, the Palestinian health ministry said, the fourth such killing in two days. SANA’A: Yemen’s warring parties have agreed to renew a two-month truce, the UN said yesterday, in an 11th-hour move on the day it was set to expire. However, he denied claims made by former State Security Agency director-general Arthur Fraser that he had a part in concealing the crime. The national Transport Department has mooted dedicated lanes on the country’s roads for taxis and all buses. Its newly gazetted White Paper on National Transport Policy says priority lanes will be looked into with a view to mitigating travel times and drawing more people to public transport. Only public buses under the rapid transit (BRT) system currently have dedicated lanes in various cities. BRASILIA: The death toll from heavy rain in Brazil’s north-east Pernambuco state over the past week has increased to 107, with 11 people still missing, according to officials.
