The University of Venda joins several other universities that have made vaccinations mandatory for the coming year. The PSA said it was shocking that staff and students were told that the unvaccinated would not be allowed on campus from January 1. The “no vaccination, no entry” regulation to force students and employees to vaccinate violated their constitutional rights, the PSA said. “The PSA acknowledges the impact of the pandemic, but it equally values the right of individuals not to vaccinate for a variety of reasons, including concerns about side-effects,” it said. Victims of Larry Nassar, the former doctor for the US women’s gymnastics team, reached a $380-million (over R6-billion) settlement on Monday with USA Gymnastics (USAG), the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and their insurers after a five-year legal battle. The settlement will cover claims brought among others by Olympic gold medallists Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney, who were among Nassar’s most high-profile sexual abuse victims. Nigeria have appointed Augustine Eguavoen as interim coach of the men’s national team for the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) next month in Cameroon, after firing German Gernot Rohr from the top position. BankservAfrica’s head of stakeholder engagements, Shergeran Naidoo, said yesterday that at 125, the BETI Index for November was 2.3 points down from October and a further 6.2 points down from September. “In the last three months, the BETI numbers have weakened.” BankservAfrica processes and settles millions of interbank transactions daily and provided a good indication of the movements in the South African economy through the BETI, which is an indicator of the direction of the economic flow. The lawsuit which was filed by Justin Blitz of Schulman Blitz LLP states that The Daily Show host suffered from “serious personal injury” which is “permanent, severe and grievous”, and that the accused failed “to prescribe proper medications” as well as failing to “discontinue certain prescription medications”. The doctor is also accused of failing “to use proper tests and examinations in order to diagnose the conditions from which Noah” was suffering”. According to the FNB, consumer sentiment has remained depressed due to soaring fuel prices, the resumption of rolling blackouts, further job losses and the threat of a fourth wave of Covid-19 infections. The FNB/BER Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) released yesterday showed that confidence edged up slightly, from -10 to -9 index points, during the fourth quarter of 2021. However, at -9 index points, the CCI remained well below the average CCI reading of +2 points and therefore still pointed to low levels of consumer confidence. South Africa has rejected Eskom’s request to remain exempt from pollution standards at some coal-fired power stations, which the utility said yesterday would force it to immediately shut down 16 000MW of capacity. That equals about a third of the generating capacity of Africa’s most industrialised country. South Africa relies on Eskom for more than 90 percent of its electricity, which derives chiefly from 15 ageing coal-fired power stations, for which it has enjoyed waivers on emissions limits for soot, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide.
