The 24-year-old, originally from Mtubatuba, was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare, inherited eye disease that could lead to complete blindness after his Grade 2 teacher detected he had difficulties seeing in 2004. A NASA mission to deliberately smash a spacecraft into an asteroid – a test run should humanity ever need to stop a giant space rock from wiping out life on Earth – blasted off early yesterday from California.
