THE JOBURG Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has warned residents against flouting lockdown regulations after the arrest of more than 50 people last weekend. Between Friday, August 13, and Saturday, August 14, 53 people were arrested across the city for contravening the Disaster Management Act curfew regulations. Three additional arrests were made for driving under the influence as well as reckless and negligent driving. Most of the offenders were nabbed in Regions D (which include Soweto) and F1 (which include the Joburg CBD), with 26 and 16 people arrested respectively. The country is under level 3 lockdown, which prohibits the movement of persons between 10pm and 4am, with strict exceptions. On Wednesday, Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu published a green paper on Comprehensive Social Security and Retirement Reform for comment by December 10. The Department of Social Development said the fund would complement social assistance programmes, social insurance funds and private arrangements. The fund intends to provide basic benefits, such as pensions, disability and survivor benefits, for all qualifying citizens up to a threshold – including all employees from within the private sector.
