The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced the results for the Young Architect Award 2016 on May 21. After the first round of document reviews, 7 out of 28 teams were selected, and 3 teams including Kim Hyonseok (principal, june architects), Shin Minjae (principal, AnLstudio), Ann Keehyun (assistant professor, Hanyang University), and Lee Seungteak, Lim Mijung (principal, stpmj) made it to the final rounds after the second round of open review. ‘Gomjumsum’, a solo exhibition of installation artist Jihyun Jung at DOOSAN Gallery opened from June 1, alludes ‘something uncanny the audience is about to face.’ The title does not have any special meaning. Titles of the 25 works in the exhibition also have words that stimulate the imagination. With the combination among these words, it seems like an endless story is unfolding. While most of the programmes have been interesting and have aimed at diverse responses, they seem to lack any real response to the land and the surrounding environment. Take The Void as an example. Slightly changing the location or the direction from where it is now would not make much of a difference. In the year 1994, when I went abroad for further study after finishing undergraduate study and military service, the world was excited over the Internet. At that time, William Mitchell, head of the department of architecture at MIT, predicted in his book City of Bits that the Internet would change our cities and lifestyle. Then, Amazon didn’t yet exist and the internet could only be accessed through Netscape. Most internet pages browsed by Netscape were the research papers of scientists. Unlike now, those pages were filled only with text. In that system, by clicking letters or words of different colours, known as hypertext, would lead to a linked page. The biennale is an international and extremely personal report that shows what problems architects and their countries face in contemporary society. When the Venice Architecture Biennale is spatially formed of two segments, Jardini and Arsenale, its contents have two axes, the main exhibition curated by Alejandro Aravena and the national pavilion exhibitions which reinterpret Aravena’s message ‘Reporting from the Front’ through separate filters. Seogyo-dong is a residential district in the area near Hongik University, otherwise known as the Hongdae area. With the development of large-scale franchises and commercial buildings in recent years, many skyscrapers resembling those around the Gangnam Station and Shinchon area have now been built in the Hongdae region. However, the region is primarily a residential area, which means it is legally banned from having the kinds of buildings that attract large numbers of people. In spite of such institutional constraints, it is nevertheless drawing a massive number of commercial buildings, which may have to do with it being a unique space with the vestige of low-density residential areas with various residential features, differentiating it from other densely-populated commercial areas with uniform development patterns. A synthesis between ‘anonymous architecture’ and ‘no one ever knows’ The street between Hangangjin and Itaewon station, which goes by the name ‘Comme des Garçons street’, is a dense retail district that has recently been caught the attention of trendsetters in Seoul. Located down the hill from the Hyundai Card Music Library, by the entrance of the Hannam Village, On Ne Sait Jamais café is one of these select shops. Here, there are none of the studious tables nor customary chairs that one might commonly picture in a café. The whole house is made up of multiple buildings: the main building, a second bedroom building, and the guest bedroom building. One step back from a crowded street, there is a small canal running across the Giardini. On the bank of the canal, the Australian Pavilion emerges, which has turned out to be the very first construction of the 21st century. If one enters the pavilion, you will realize that it doesn’t have any particular object to show, and will be surprised to find that the space is almost empty. SPACE: We find that the Mu Xin Art Museum is linked within an area comprising the Grand Theater, the Historic District and a Visitor Center around the river. How did you plan to architecturally reconcile the natural conditions and the urban historic context of the location? Hiroshi Okamoto (Okamoto): When we first visited the site, we were truly inspired with the well restored ancient canal town where the artist, Mu Xin was born. The canal was a lifeline due to its long history of economic growth, connecting streets, markets, and courtyards with bridges and boats. On June 14 1986, Korean modern architecture lost a prominent figure: the architect who designed buildings such as Kyungdong Presbyterian Church, the Space Group Building, and the Seoul Olympic Stadium, as well as urban areas like Sewoon Arcade, Yeouido, and Daehangno. He was the Lorenzo de' Medici of Korea between the 1970s and 1980s, who created space in the Space Group Building in which numerous artists have long mingled. Most of all, he was the architect that commenced publishing the monthly journal SPACE, which has now become the representative architectural and cultural magazine and is now celebrating its 50th anniversary. To Live Together Seongsu-dong and Munrae-dong in Seoul, Korea are well known for being naturally formed local communities by artists moving in to the area, while Heyri of Paju is known for being a local community that only accepts residents based on their professions, such as writers, artists, filmmakers and architects as residents, hence reinforcing the local identity. These local communities are known for forming a place in which people from similar backgrounds come together, leading the once desolate city to start becoming a place in which neighbours form bonds of friendship and dependence. I was surprised twice when I first visited the Daekyoung Factory. The first surprise was the beautiful scenery of the mouth of the river of the Nakdonggang River, and the second surprise was that the beautiful scenery could not be seen at all from the factory complex. There were three buildings in the complex, with two buildings lined up on parallel lines, making a rectangular plaza. The plaza was busy, with many workers passing by. The third building was placed perpendicularly with the plaza, blocking the scenery towards the sea. We are facing the biennale with the relaxed spirit of a winner, and therefore also with some expectations of winning an award. We are in a place where we can focus on what we should hope to express through the biennale, instead of obsessing over the competition and winning awards.
