Around Christmas time back in 2010, I sounded-off loud and clear in this column when the free-to-air networks took away their HD versions of the main broadcast channels (Channel 2, 7, 9, etc.). At the time, this left viewers who had invested in expensive ‘Full Hi-Def’ 1080i TVs without high-definition access to their favourite shows. The main channels, along with all the top-quality shows, were relegated to Standard Definition, while the HD slots were taken over by special interest channels like ABC News 24, 7Mate and Gem. Worse still, those special interest channels (at least at the time) ran an amalgam of re-runs and re-cycled content — much of which was not even in widescreen, let alone high definition!
