Here’s a statue of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, who was known for her courage and resourcefulness. She stands just off York Street, a short roll from Martin Place, in Sydney city. Her hand is extended, as if to say, “Hand it over.” But it’s unclear what she actually wants.
The plaque reveals that the statue was given to a former lord mayor of Sydney by the mayor of Athens, back when the Sydney Olympics were happening in 2000. It was a symbolic gift, since the Olympics began back in ancient Greece and Sydney was hosting the Games that year.
